(Tongcuclamnghiep) – The Eight Joint Meeting and Fourth Negotiation Session on the Voluntary Partnership Agreement  on Forest Law Enforcement, Government, and Trade (VPA/FLEGT) between Vietnam and European Union (EU) took place in Ha Noi on October 20 – 24, 2014. During the three days of technical discussion and two days of negotiation, essential issues in the Agreement have been discussed and significant progress on key issues, including the definition of legal timber, the structure of Vietnam Timber Legality Assurance System (VNTLAS), and disclose of information, has been made.

FLEGT Information

Opportunities and challenges for enterprises vs FLEGT implementation: Once VPA/FLEGT is signed, enterprises trading and processing timber will be evaluated and will need to comply in order for products to be exported to the EU. October – November 2014: NEPCon and the Research Institute for Sustainable Forest Management and Forest Certification (SFMI) are looking for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in timber industry to join the preliminary research and pilot test of toolkit to help SMEs comply with applicable regulation and source low risk timber.
