During the VIFA-EXPO 2015 that will take place in Ho Chi Minh City on 11-14 March 2015, NEPCon and SFMI are going to introduce a free toolkit for timber processing and trading enterprises in Vietnam : The toolkit will ultimately contain a range of tools to guide businesses on how they can comply with the applicable regulations of the timber industry in Vietnam and source low risk timber.
The Vietnamese timber industry is export-oriented, with the EU as one of the major destinations. In order to prevent the trade of illegal timber products in their market, the EU has developed the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan. Currently, Vietnam is in the midst of formal FLEGT Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) negotiations with the EU.
Under the FLEGT/VPA, the domestic material business sources will be evaluated to meet Vietnamese timber legality requirements. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s timber processors and exporters, particularly small and medium ones, see challenges ahead in fulfilling the technical requirements for assuring the legality of timber used in the processing industry.
The toolkit is free to use, and enterprises can take and adapt the tools to their business. The tools can form the foundation of businesses purchasing policy, tracking procedures, communication with customers and suppliers, along with guidance and reference material to help enterprises source legal timber.
This toolkit is developed as part of the “Increasing capacity of Civil Society Organisations and SMEs to Implement FLEGT Requirements” Project partly funded by EU, and implemented by NEPCon and SFMI.
In the coming months, 20-25 selected small and medium enterprises will be testing the toolkit to ensure it is user-friendly, functional and effective; before it is revised for wider dissemination and enterprises are trained next year.
VIFA is an annual event organised by the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City (HAWA). Following the success of previous fairs, VIFA 2015 is set to take place this March at the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Centre, 799 Nguyen Van Linh Street, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, with the participation of over 180 international and national timber related enterprises.
Also at this event, visitors at “Get to grips with FLEGT” Booth (E05) will have a chance to meet our timber legality experts to discuss your challenges regarding timber legality assurance during “legality clinics” and at the “have-your-say” corner.
