Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Timber trade: Need to agree on control system
(MARD) – After the 5th negotiation of Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) in January 2016 in Hanoi, beside the consensus reached on crucial components of the agreement including the timber legality assurance system (TLAS) and the management of imported timber, the two sides need to discuss further on the FLEGT licence issuance mechanism and the control system in the following rounds of negotiation.

Would the timber processing industry benefit from TPP?
(TBKTSG Online) – Timber processing enterprises and experts in the industry are expecting a larger market when the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement is implemented. However, in order to take the advantage of this offer, there are so many things need to be done.

Enterprises in timber industry: Deeper integration, greater challenges
(DĐDN) – The timber processing for export industry in Vietnam is becoming the key economic sector, especially when Vietnam signs free trade agreements with different countries and international organisations. However, under the pressure from current economic integration, timber enterprises are facing many challenges.

Forest protection and development is the solution to enhance the value and competitiveness of forest sector
(QĐND) – In recent years, forest protection and development in our forestry sector has improved rapidly, contributing significantly to the timber export turnover of Vietnam. According to the Deputy Minister of MARD, General Director of Vietnam Administration of Forestry, Mr. Ha Cong Tuan, “forest protection and development our goal, but the strategy is to ensure sustainable development. This is also the incentive and the solution to enhance the value and competitiveness of forest sector”



2016- 2017: On17 Feb 2016, PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest) announced their standard revision process and invite experts and stakeholders to involve in the process. 04th Feb 2016: The report “Illegal timber in Vietnam through the media’s lens: Situation, Causes and Solutions” was released by Forest Trends and PanNature. It describes the current situation of illegal timber in Vietnam from the perspective of the press and evaluate the effectiveness of media in combating illegal timber harvesting and forest protection. 18th Feb 2016: The European Commission released a report on the effectiveness of the EU Timber Regulation during its first two years of implementation. The report finds that the EU is on track to achieve its objectives to combat illegal logging and associated trade in illegal timber, but challenges remain. There is progress in the first two years, but more effort is needed from Member States and private sector in implementation and enforcement of the EUTR. 26th Feb 2016: Workshop on Introduction of the model that help enterprises meet the requirements of the timber legality assurance system in the VPA/FLEGT process, jointly organised by The Center for Rural Development in Central Vietnam, Forest Protection Department of Quang Tri Province and the FLEGT Project in Central Vietnam.
